The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has just posted a position for a firearms examiner.  The starting salary is listed at $59,079, but may be negotiable based on experience.  The posting closes on 5/7/24 at 11:59PM EST.


Since September of 2022, we have moved into a new state-of-the-art laboratory.  Columbia, SC is located centrally to the state, and is only a couple of hours' drive from the many beaches along the coast and from the Appalachian mountains.  Columbia is also a short drive from Charlotte, NC, Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC (The Holy City).


The area offers many options for outdoor enthusiasts (especially fishing), as well as college and minor league sports teams.

The North Dakota Office of Attorney General is hiring a Firearm/Toolmark examiner.  This position will be filled as a Forensic Scientist I or II located at the State Crime Laboratory in Bismarck, ND.  The position will work under the direct supervision of the Firearm/Toolmark Unit Technical Leader.  Qualification for a Forensic Scientist II will depend on previous experience and salary will be commensurate with experience for a Level II examiner.  Please contact me if you have any questions about this position: jpenner@nd.gov.

Announcements / AFTE 2024 West Virginia University Subclass Study

Keith Morris and Veronica Franklin from West Virginia University are conducting a study on the accuracy and reproducibility of firearm examiners in identifying specific markings on firearm evidence, specifically on fired cartridge cases. This study will use images from the 3D topography of cartridge cases and a graphical user interface in the determination of individual and subclass characteristics within breech face marks.


They are looking for firearms examiners to participate in this study. 


There will be a participatory opportunity to experience their work at AFTE in Alaska.
