Purpose of job
The fundamental features of this position are to perform and supervise forensic analysis activities. Responsibilities include examining, testing, and analyzing evidence obtained at crime scenes; confirming ballistics evidence matches; preparing reports or presentations of findings, investigative methods, or laboratory techniques; testifying in court as an expert witness on evidence or laboratory techniques; supervising evidence analysis; and training staff. Supervision is exercised over sworn and civilian employees. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated primarily on the basis of results achieved.
Examples Of Essential Duties:
Supervise and direct others in work involving the scientific and technical analysis of evidence and/or convicted offender DNA samples; supervise activities of a forensic laboratory unit; assist with budget preparation, quality audits, quality assurance, laboratory planning, laboratory projects, grants, training and development, developing specifications for acquisition of specialized equipment or supplies, and in developing/revising operational and technical policies and procedures and perform some forensic analysis of evidence or ballistic firearms and/or offender DNA samples, provide expert testimony to courts; communicate with federal, state and other law enforcement agencies; understands the scientific methods and techniques used in investigations of major crimes and crime scenes (based on experience obtained through examination of complex case evidence, and/or reconstruction of major crime scenes, and/or processing of complex crime scenes).
Typical Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in forensic science, a physical or natural science, or related field and five years of experience in forensic analysis, including one year of experience in a lab accredited by ASCLD or another accrediting body and one year of supervisory or management experience. Applicants must have experience providing expert court testimony in at least one area of forensic analysis.
