This position will have a unique opportunity to take part in the development of a pilot Crime Gun Center (NIBIN sub-unit). This will involve some innovation as we will need to change the process of case flow in the Firearms Unit to incorporate the function of the NIBIN sub-unit.
This position manages a firearms unit made up of one senior examiner, two new examiners (one year out of training), and one technician. This unit does firearms and toolmark cases but not gun shot residue/distance determination.
Unit supervisors are part of the crime scene response team in Michigan and participation is highly encouraged at our Bridgeport Lab.
We also have EvoFinder! Our Bridgeport lab is working through training modules and competency tests to be fully online with VCM.
If you have any questions about the position or our plans to create NIBIN as a sub-unit please give me a call or email me. 517-282-8134 smithr73@michigan.gov

Dan O'Kelly's Firearm Specialist Course was one of the trainings I took after only being on for a month and I feel like it helped me tremendously as a new examiner!
That's a week long course but I think something similar crunched down to a full day Sunday would be great for new examiners and students!

I'm going to piggyback on Skip. Knowing when you've done enough, or finding the moment you are confident in an inconclusive result, would be quite helpful for new examiners. Also something on how to deal with missing something with NIBIN/triage or finding a mistake 6 months to many many years afterward (your own or someone else's).

Hi John-William,
Great question. We should have the price posted in the next two weeks. We're hashing out the final details for transportation. We're sorry about the delay on this one.
Thanks!

Jessica,
Does anyone know when the price for the Pioneer Broach tour will be posted/added to the registration cost? I just want to make sure to pay the registration with that workshop cost built in for only one bill to my agency.
Thanks!

Hi everyone! You've got one more month for early registration, which closes on Feb 17. Get those registrations in!
Also, if you have registered, check back regularly as we're adding more workshops!
