THE POSITION

The Denver Police Department Crime Laboratory currently has a position vacancy for a Firearms Examiner (Forensic Scientist II).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

This position performs daily those functions necessary to process firearms, weapons, and other objects for the identification and classification of cartridge cases, projectiles and tool marks for microscopic comparison and entry into the Integrated Ballistic Identification System Computer; performs gun powder residue pattern tests, proximity tests, and serial number restoration. Prepares reports and summaries; relays results of test to investigators; testifies in court and legal proceedings.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requires a Baccalaureate Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physics, or a directly related natural science and three years of professional criminalist and forensic analysis experience as a qualified firearms examiner. Experience with ISO accreditation standards as they pertain to firearms examination and knowledge of IBIS/NIBIN system operation is preferred.

A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in the noted fields and five years experience as a qualified Firearms Examiner and knowledge of firearms and other types of weapons; knowledge of ballistics; knowledge of computers; knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures with the ability to apply the knowledge to specific situations; knowledge of the rules of evidence. Knowledge of crime scene evidence collection and preservation as it applies to this firearms.
