Senior Forensic Scientist (Firearms Tool Marks Unit), Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Examines and classifies firearms, ammunition, fired ammunition components, tools and tool mark related evidence submitted by PBSO and local law enforcement officers; compares and identifies bullets, cartridge cases and other ammunition components, tools and tool mark related evidence using a full range of techniques; determines the make, model and serial number of firearms; testifies in federal and state courts as an expert witness; assists with trajectory reconstruction at crime scenes when needed; conducts experimental research into specialized areas of firearms and tool mark identification. Performs all related duties as assigned. Requires: Bachelor’s Degree, supplemented by experience in firearms examination. Knowledge of principles, theories, practices and methodology related to firearms and tool mark evidence. Knowledge of state laws and regulations governing firearms. Knowledge of and experience with calibrating and operating laboratory instruments, i.e., comparison microscope, electronic and mechanical balances, measuring projector and other related firearms testing devices. Testimony in criminal proceedings such as depositions or trials is required. This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. PREFERENCES: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Crime Laboratory. Hiring range of $4,378 - $4,782 per month, plus an excellent benefits package.
