OPEN POSITION - CONTINUOUS RECRUIT

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking a qualified applicant to serve as a Firearms & Toolmarks examiner in the Central Laboratory, located in Richmond, Virginia. The incumbent is responsible to examine, compare and evaluate a wide variety of items such as various firearms, unfired ammunition, fired components, clothing, tools and objects bearing toolmarks. Testifies in courts of law as an expert on examinations performed. Works with examiners, officials and law enforcement personnel during analytical examinations to support criminal investigations. Except as noted, the following are required: Knowledge and experience in forensic principles, practices, procedures and techniques used to prepare, examine, analyze and identify firearms and toolmarks evidence; experience in evidence handling, preservation and identification and preparing and presenting narrative reports; a demonstrated mechanical aptitude to assemble, disassemble and/or operate a variety of tools and equipment, including firearms and laboratory equipment; an ability to present fact-finding evidence as a qualified expert in a court of law and experience in preparing reports of findings. Job requires some travel.

The successful applicant must have completed a recognized training program in firearm/toolmark examinations and a moot court. A bachelor’s degree is required with a major in a physical, natural or forensic science preferred. Prefer experience with NIBIN and affiliation with AFTE; and with computers in a laboratory environment. Applicants should be prepared for oral and/or practical examinations during the interview.
