Crime Scene Section Supervisor

ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Phoenix Police Department Laboratory Services Bureau is a nationally accredited forensic laboratory that provides technical assistance and training, evaluates and analyzes evidence, interprets results and provides expert testimony related to the full spectrum of physical evidence recovered from crime scenes. Some of the scientific procedures utilized by the laboratory have the potential for linking a suspect to a crime, victim, or a scene.  The Crime Scene Response Section is accredited by the Forensic Quality Services – International, ISO/IEC 17205:2005.
The Phoenix Police Department Laboratory Services Bureau consists of over 100 professional staff and is comprised of eight specialized sections which include Evidence Processing, Latent Prints, Crime Scene Response, Forensic Biology, Controlled Substances, Questioned Documents, Trace/ Arson, Toxicology, and Firearms.
The Crime Scene Section Supervisor serves as the Technical Leader for the Crime Scene Response Section and supervises Crime Scene Shift Supervisors and Crime Scene Specialists in the performance of their work analyzing, collecting, and processing evidence at crime scenes and/or in the lab. Duties include preparing administrative reports on the operations of the Crime Scene Response Section; training Specialists in all aspects of analyzing, collecting, and processing crime scene evidence; working with the quality manager and other management personnel to ensure accreditation standards are met; testifies in court as a witness in connection to the scenes processed and evidence developed and preserved and trains staff in how to effectively testify in court; studies new techniques and procedures in crime scene evidence collection and processing; and participates in a structured training program.
 
 SALARY
$66,518 – $99,195 annualized.  Appointment can be made above the minimum depending upon qualifications.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Five years of experience in crime scene processing or other related forensic science discipline.
  • Two years of experience at a supervisory or acting supervisory level in this field.
  • A bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 32 hours of natural science related coursework, or a related natural science degree
  • Must hold a professional certification from the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst within one year of hire.
  • Positions in the Police Department must meet the polygraph and background standards that are appropriate to non-sworn positions.  The general factors for disqualification are listed at

  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A well-qualified candidate will possess the job requirements listed above, plus:
 
  • Experience working in an accredited crime laboratory.
  • Professional certification from the International Association for Identification as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst at time of hire.
