EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Position: Firearm/Toolmark Examiner, Civil Service (non-sworn) Civilian

Starting Salary Range: $24.96 to $32.31 per hour. (Commensurate with experience)    
   
Location: Mission, Kansas (Kansas City metro area)

The Johnson County Crime Laboratory, a Division of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, is seeking a qualified applicant for a position in the Firearm/Toolmark Section. The major duties include examining firearms for proper function; microscopic comparison of bullets and cartridge cases; serial number restoration; GSR examination of clothing associated with firearms cases; NIBIN; and toolmark examinations.  Other duties may be assigned based upon the qualifications of the successful applicant.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, criminalistics/forensic science, natural science or any other closely related field with laboratory science coursework. At least three years of experience in Forensic Firearms/Toolmarks casework is required. Must have experience and work history as a proficiency tested casework examiner in an ASCLD/LAB accredited lab. Must have the minimum of one year pursuing knowledge of the principles of criminal investigation and the legal issues concerning rules of evidence and search and seizure and experience testifying as an expert witness. The applicant will be required to successfully complete a laboratory training program and a Firearm/Toolmark competency test before beginning independent casework responsibilities.
