THE POSITION

The Prince George's County Police Department is seeking a highly qualified and experienced firearms examiner, grade P24, for its Firearms Examination Unit, in the Forensic Services Division.

The position of Firearms Examiner is a professional and technical position involving forensic examinations in the areas of firearms, toolmark, serial number restoration, and gunshot residue analysis.
EXAMPLES OF WORK

Conducts forensic examinations in the areas of firearm, toolmark, serial number restoration, gunshot residue and fracture identification, to include chemical examination; completes various scientific analysis with proficiency and in accordance with the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD-Lab), and Maryland State Forensic Laboratory Advisory Committee (FLAC) requirements; enters and analyzes computer data to include National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), forensic imaging analysis; testifies in court as an expert witness; assists other forensic units, prosecutors and other jurisdictions with examination requests.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, plus certification as a qualified firearms and toolmark examiner as stipulated by the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE). Documentation verifying completion of training must be submitted with the employment application.



ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


A college degree from an accredited institution in the physical sciences and appropriate experience in the forensic firearms field.

Experience in the forensic firearms field.

Recognition by criminal courts as a firearms Examiner.

Competency statement from appropriate agency with training records.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must pass a police background investigation.

Must pass a drug screen.

Maintain certification as a firearms and toolmark examiner.

Must be willing to work shift work.

This is an essential position. The employee is expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate.

Employee is expected to report to work or remain at work when others are granted administrative leave.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligibles which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
