Firearms & Toolmarks
Position CF547
Salary: $50,139 - $83,880
Location: Norfolk
 

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking a qualified applicant to serve as a Firearms & Toolmarks examiner in the Eastern Laboratory, located in Norfolk, Virginia. The candidate will be responsible to examine, compare and evaluate a wide variety of items such as various firearms, unfired ammunition, fired components, clothing, tools and objects bearing toolmarks. Testify in courts of law as an expert on examinations performed. Work with examiners, officials and law enforcement personnel during analytical examinations to support criminal investigations. Job requires some travel.
 
Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; experience as a Forensic Scientist qualified in firearm & toolmark examinations; experience testifying in court as an expert in the field; successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency; ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately analyze, interpret data and develop conclusions; ability to precisely explain and defend scientific results both verbally and in writing; knowledge of laboratory safety and QA/QC procedures; valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation.
 
Preferred qualifications: Experience using the NIBIN network; membership in and/or certification by AFTE; experience working in an accredited forensic science laboratory; and familiarity with ASCLD/LAB accreditation criteria. Applicants should be prepared for oral and/or practical examinations during the interview.
 
If a fully qualified candidate cannot be found, the position will be filled as a Forensic Scientist Trainee at a salary of $39,175. The training will last approximately 24 months, dependent upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
