The DC Metropolitan Police Department is now accepting applications for the position of Firearms Technician.

POSITION:  Firearms Technician, CS 1802 -7

OPENING DATE:           08/04/2008

CLOSING DATE:           08/15-/2008


BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: 

Incumbent is responsible for receiving incoming evidence and independently performs the initial observations, measurements, computations, and analyses relating to the examination of a variety of irreplaceable physical evidence recovered in the District of Columbia and those submitted by other surrounding jurisdictions.  Maintains the laboratory computer, ProComm system and property book by logging in all firearms and firearms related evidence submitted into the manufacturer, model, serial number, and caliber of the firearm.  Examines test fires bullets to determine general rifling characteristics which includes the measurement of one land impression, one groove impression, and the direction of twist.  The acquired information is recorded as an input into the ballistics computer imaging systems, namely Drugfire and integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS).  Performs serial number restoration procedures and, as necessary, will be required to testify in U.S. District Court and Superior Court for the District of Columbia relative to the function and operation of firearms as well as serial number restoration procedures.  Maintains and ensures proper operation of simple to the most complex unit equipment, instrumentation and assigned work area.  Identifies and assesses new equipment and supplies which might benefit the unit operations and determines the most cost-effective sources for these items and procures them.  Performs other job related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: 

Candidates must have one (1) year of specialized experience. Specialized Experience is experience that has demonstrated accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled.  To be creditable, specialized experience must have been at least equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.  Time-in-grade requirements are applicable.  Substitution of education for experience will be allowed as defined by the X-118 Qualifications Standards.  However, in order to receive credit, you must submit official proof with your application.

1.   Comprehensive knowledge of rules of evidence and legal procedures involved in handing physical replicas.

2.   Knowledge of laboratory safety practices which permits duties to be carried out in a manner which is free from potential injury to self and others. 

3.   Knowledge of the mission, priorities, commitments, policies, and goals of the Department, and the Firearms Identification Unit’s protocols and procedures as it pertains to the identification and handling of firearms.
