Title: Contest & Prizes
Post by: David Wright on November 14, 2005, 10:49:40 AM
The AFTE Headstamp Gallery (http://www.afte.org/ExamResources/gallery/Headstamp-Gallery) is in need of new submissions.

The previous call for assistance went unanswered, so we've decided to sweeten the deal with a CONTEST!

Here are the rules:

Reply to this post and attach a photo of a headstamp that is not currently featured in the Headstamp Gallery (http://www.afte.org/ExamResources/gallery/Headstamp-Gallery) and you'll be entered into a drawing.

Multiple submissions will result in multiple entries (The Jim Hamby Method), increasing your chance of winning.

You may post any information you have about the headstamp along with the photo or simply post a pic and let someone else do the research.

The drawing will be held this Friday at 4:00 pm CST and the winner will be announced on the site.

And the prize...

A complete 7 disc DVD set of the Technical Papers presented at the AFTE 2005 Annual Training Seminar in Indianapolis earlier this year (I'll pocket the cost of the discs and shipping).

If you're not feeling lucky, you can always guarantee yourself a DVD set by ordering here (http://www.afte.org/tsDVDsales/tsdvdsales.htm).

Good Luck!

Yep, i helped out.  I also have a copy of the "out takes" which includes Charlse nodding off and him walking around with toilet paper on his shoe.  I'll throw that in to sweeten the deal.   :D

Seriously, there are 2 sets up for the winning (if clow steps up).  If you have a pile of ammo to sort through for the contest but not enough time, i bet you can ask Dave nicely to extend the contest until next week.

The 3-D headstamp was used by 3-D Co. Inc., later 3-D Investments Inc., Doniphan, Nebraska. 3-D loaded the Equalloy bullet made in England for Axiom Reseach Corp of Raleigh, NC for a short period of time (circa 1987). 3-D produced a line of loaded ammunition they marketed from about 1949 to 2000 when they went out of business. Hornady acquired the machinery and raw materials of 3-D. The company history of both Axiom Research and 3-D are available at no charge to labs that have the 2005 version of our Headstamp CD.

Why don't we continue to do this sort of thing in order to expand the database.  Maybe we can do the same thing next year.  Or maybe the winner of the current contest can put something up as the prize and we can just continue like that.

The "S" on the headstamp indicates a cartridge with a "small flash hole".  The "S" will remain as part of the headstamp.  The "A" which is sometimes seen on the primer will be discontinued as it was part of an internal tracking system.

Richard,

Thanks for posting those.  It is obvious from the headstamps that these cartridges are made with reloaded or purchased brass.

Everyone should be very careful when making statements about the manufacturer of fired cartridge cases or bullets being related back to those manufacturers.

Just because it says FC on the headstamp it doesn't mean the present load was assembled at a Federal Ammunition facility!

I found this in a box of mixed of ammunition turned in by a local PD.  It is 30-06 Springfield caliber.  The projectile weighs ~165 grains, is copper colored, has a black colored tip, and is attracted to a magnet.
