Title: Possible research topics
Post by: Kim Haag on March 22, 2007, 05:07:16 PM
Here are two possible research topics I had:

1.  Looking at specifically chamber marks on cartridge casings and what can affect them:
-  Water or oil on case or in chamber, does caliber matter
-  Reduced loads, does caliber matter
-  Dirt etc. in chamber
-  Loose vs. tight cartridge/chamber fit

2.  How consistent is wad drop off for estimating shotgun shooter location.  The various wad designs could be tested and compared.

Seems like one of my NFEA classmates did her research topic on wads and at what distance they fall off.  Jennifer Gray I believe.  If so, chime in Jennifer.

Hey There,

"How consistent is wad drop off for estimating shotgun shooter location.  The various wad designs could be tested and compared."

I actually did do my NFEA research project on this topic, and Mr. Haag Sr. was responsible for the idea.  :) I actually tested shotshells with paper wads and ones with plastic cups, and it was interesting how the bend of the petals effected the drop.  I wanted to go further with this test, to use different wad designs, but haven't found the time. :(  I would be more than happy to foward the paper.

Thanks Jen,  I would love to read your paper.  It sounds like you have some great ideas for furthering your research.  Maybe if you don't have time, you would be able to assist someone in continuing this line of research?
Would you be able to email me your paper?

Thanks in advance!

Jen,

I would be interested in seeing if I could possibly continue the research for this topic.  I definitely think this is one topic that needs substantial  research.

I also sent you a email in regards to this.

Cheers,

Matthew

Kim, Jennifer, and Matthew,

I have a student (Jen Bishop) here at the University of Central Oklahoma that is interested in further researching this topic. Would it be possible for you to forward that paper on to me so she can get started on this independent study?

I think Rosmary Jassoy in Tampa did a small study on wad distance stuff.

I did a small controlled test using Federal 12 Ga 9 pellet 00 Buck (2 pc wad) for a case that involved 2 different bbl lengths (different chokes). :detective:

I will ask my students to definitely go through this......
I think this will be great help for them....

Chamber pitting and case mouth variations might also be worth consideration. Sometimes case mouths flow forward in distinctive and uneven ways and other markings may be present. This is an amateur's opinion, so bear that in mind. And good luck.
