At our lab we recently purchased a Leica FSC comparison microscope as well as a digital imaging system for our Leica UFM. This was a welcome upgrade for our scope room. Attached are various images of the scope room before and after. We are happy to be in the 21st century.
Image 1 is a view of our scope room just before the upgrade.
Image 2 is a view of our UFM purchased circa 1999.
Image 5 is the construction of the FSC
Image 6 is the construction of the 2 scope systems along with a color laser printer
Image 7, 8, 9, & 10 are the finished products.
We purchased 4 lighting systems:
1& 2) The standard Bifurcated fiber optics as well as the new LED system both for oblique illumination.
3) Cold light illumination to mimic florescent lighting.
4) Coaxial lighting
As time goes on we will be updating this thread with the performance of the 2 new systems. Anyone who wishes to jump in and add their experiences with these scopes or any other scopes are welcome.

Nice pics. Good luck with your new (expensive) instrument. Sorry about my intense desire for good beer, must have something to do with my German/Irish heritage. I'll only let you buy me a beer if you let me do the same. O0

Cool! New toys are always fun. O0 If you scroll through the photos really fast, it looks like one of those flip books when you rifle through the pages, the subject is animated. Except this is a microscope being built! :)

Two things with the LED lights.
1. To diffuse it, take some Kimwipes and place it over the lights. Don't worry, they are cool lights and don't heat up so no worries about fire. One ply works better than two.
2. If you can't turn off the room lights above the scope, this will give you a red/green hue on either side. I've placed a piece of paper to block the room lights. Then you tell everyone it's just like the Wizard of Oz and not to pay attention to the items behind the curtain.

Are we talking about the bar illuminators or the round kind?

I've been trying the Kimwipe diffusers on and off for a couple of months now. I still generally get better results on the old scopes with fluorescent lighting. Especially with bullets, it seems.
I've occasionally gotten better results with the LED's when it's an especially shiny nickel primer with a lot of 'noisy' marks. But, I haven't seen it often enough to say for sure that it's a consistent advantage.

That is good to know about the LED lights for the FS C, we were thinking about getting them for ours. Last year we purchased the LEEDS/Olympus comparison microscope and we love it. The optics are amazing. We like the lighting a lot better than the FS C plus it allows you to use the coarse focus on both stages independently. It also allows for higher magnification which we have found to be helpful now that we have it. I highly recommend this scope. The other examiners at our lab love it as well.

I just ripped the old fluor. lights off of a mothballed AO and rigged the articulating arms to fit. Not too difficult, but if you use the Fiber Optic set up a lot it might be a pain.
It's a HUUU UUU UUUGE difference. And $ = 0 (if you have the lights)
I'm sure the warranty is shot though ;D
