THE POSITION

The Prince George’s County Police Department Forensic Services Division, Firearms Examination Unit, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced firearms examiner, grade P24, for its Firearms Examination Unit.

The Firearms Examination Unit is a medium size state-of-the-art facility with modern equipment, Forensic (digital) Imaging and Information System (FiiS), NIBIN/IBIS station, an indoor firearms range, water recovery system, and an extensive firearms collection totaling 1300 firearms from all over the world.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

The position of Firearms Examiner is a professional and technical position involving forensic examinations in the areas of firearms, toolmark, serial number restoration, and gunshot residue analysis; must have computer skills to operate FiiS-LIMS system and preferably the NIBIN system. The applicant must have extensive courtroom experience and be able to assist other sections and jurisdictions with examination requests.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or G.E.D., plus certification as a qualified firearms and toolmark examiner as stipulated by the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE). Documentation verifying completion of training must be submitted with the employment application.



ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: College degree from an accredited institution in the physical sciences and appropriate experience in the forensic firearms field. Effective 2007, a degree is required for all new Firearms Examiners in order to take the AFTE (Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners) certification examination.

Must pass a police background investigation.
Maintain certification as a firearms and toolmark examiner.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligibles which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
