The Greenville County Department of Public Safety is looking for an experienced firearms examiner. 


Greenville, SC is located about 1.5 hours south of Charlotte, NC and 2.5 hours north of Atlanta, GA.  Greenville, SC is also listed as the #4 place to live according to US News & World Report.

This Criminalist position qualifies for a Class 3 sworn law enforcement police retirement as well as PPO health care benefits.  The job is with a county government agency, so the salary base pay starts at $54,569.62, however depending on previous experience and/or a master's degree the salary can start closer to $68,000.

AZ DPS is advertising for an Experienced Firearm Examiner position at Forensic Scientist levels 3 or 4 (7 and 10 years experience respectively) in the Tucson lab (Southern Regional Crime Laboratory). 


FS3 and FS4 positions pay $93K and $110K respectively, the lab was built in 2009, and serves the region of south eastern Arizona.


Tucson is in the Sonoran Desert which means it's more green and not as hot as places like Phoenix and Las Vegas.  Tucson located at the base of Mt. Lemmon, is home of the University of Arizona, Kitt Peak Observatory, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Saguaro National Park.

Description
This is an entry level position which also serves as a probationary period. The FS 1 includes successful training to completion in the assigned discipline of forensic science (or designated subcategories). The FS 1 works under the direction of a trained analyst until authorized by the Laboratory Director or designee to work independently. Upon authorization, the FS 1 will begin testing evidence, issue forensic reports at the conclusion of testing and offer expert testimony when needed. Performs related work as required. This is a full-time position with state benefits.


Job Duties
Learns methodology in performing critical analysis of evidence in criminal cases. Accepts and receives evidence. Conducts basic examinations of suspected evidence such as controlled substances, biological materials, latent fingerprints, firearms and tool markings, toxicology samples, ignitable liquids, gunshot residues, glass fractures and other trace evidence. Documents the examination results. Responsible for the proper use, maintenance, necessary replacement and security of all personal and individual issue equipment.


Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, forensic sciences, natural sciences, or related field. Discipline specific educational requirements as specified. Based on laboratory need, the trainee applicant may be required to attend the ATF’s National Firearms Examiner Academy in Maryland as part of the required two-year firearm/toolmark examiner training program.


Special Requirements: Ability to complete a successful background check and polygraph examination. Possession of valid driver’s license.


Additional Information
Paygrade: $60,250 Base Salary for Trainee Position Forensic Scientist 1
*There are six levels of Forensic Scientist paygrades within WVSPFL's career progression system with incentive pays for Master's degree, AFTE certification, and additional section duties. In addition to career progression promotions, all full-time employees receive a yearly $500 longevity salary increase.

Retirement Plan:

Just in case our newer examiners feel uncomfortable using rifling terms like "lands and grooves", the identical "technical" terms are used by the manufacturers of drill bits!


I'd expect drill bit manufacture to be older than the rifling process in firearms.

Here's some stuff I've used over the years.  I haven't added new Glock rifling but one thing to note, because it's cool, is that even the .22 Glock rifling has rails on either side of the pseudo-lands (what I call them). 


I recently had a Glock pistol with multiple shots and test fires where only one of each of the rails was reliably marking the bullets, analogous to a driving edge in conventional rifling.

I'm not going to attend, but if you have the chance, in downtown Lonoke there is a restaurant called The Grumpy Rabbit. Locally owned, excellent food, and the staff is amazing as super friendly. Last time I was in Lonoke, we went two nights in a row.

The AFTE Training Seminar is a chance for professionals and exhibitors in the field to meet, exchange ideas, discuss interesting casework, report on new scientific work, demonstrate new technology, and refresh contacts.
