Employees in these classifications earn 104 hours of sick leave and 104 hours of vacation leave annually. Vacation accrual rates increase with seniority. Sick Leave balances are unlimited and Vacation balances have a cap of 288 hours.

The Tucson Police Department is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Firearms Examiner that is highly skilled in the forensic examination of firearms and tool mark related evidence.
The Firearms Examiner II position is a senior position that performs scientific analysis with little or no supervision. This position is tasked with more difficult, complex cases, and irregular tasks.
The Firearms Examiner III position differs from the Firearms Examiner II position in that the Firearms Examiner III position assists the supervisor and/or Quality Manager with quality assurance and quality control issues, assists with the annual quality review, if required, and trains new staff members as needed.
Composite examples of essential duties:
•Performs examinations of firearms, ammunition, ammunition components, tools, and tool marks
•Completes muzzle to target distance determinations, serial number restoration, and cartridge case ejection pattern testing
• Data entry and correlation in the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN)
•Writes scientific examination reports, testifies in court, and assists with the maintenance of the quality assurance program
•Conducts training for detectives and new police officers regarding the types of examinations that the firearms section provides and lab analysis request protocol
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Firearms Examiner III
•Bachelor's Degree in a natural or physical science such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field
•Six years of experience (non-entry) in the examination of firearms and firearms related evidence in an accredited forensic laboratory
•Valid Driver's License
• Successful completion of competency and proficiency tests is required prior to performing analysis of casework
•Arizona Criminal Justice Information System Network Terminal Operator Certification is required upon hire
Firearms Examiner II
•Bachelor's Degree in a natural or physical science such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field
•Over three years of experience (non-entry) in the examination of firearms and firearms related evidence in an accredited forensic laboratory
•Valid Driver's License
• Successful completion of competency and proficiency tests is required prior to performing analysis of casework
•Arizona Criminal Justice Information System Network Terminal Operator Certification is required upon hire
Preferred Qualifications:
•Experience as a Firearms Examiner in an American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB) accredited forensics laboratory
•Experience testifying in court as an expert witness in the Firearms Identification
•A member, in good standing, of the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE)
•Successful completion of the National Firearms Examiner Academy

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Applicants who applied correctly, met the minimum qualifications, and successfully passed the Non-Sworn Questionnaire screening will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an oral board interview. Upon completion of all examination processes, only the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as 20% of your rating for Education and Experience as outlined in the application supplemental questions, and 80% of your rating for the Oral Board Interview.
Individuals on the hiring list will be subject to the following:
• An extensive background investigation, including local, state, and national criminal and fingerprint checks.
•A polygraph examination to verify the information you have supplied on your Non-Sworn Questionnaire application and other background and employment documents.
Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List. If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must submit your documentation at the Oral Board interviews. DD 214's must be the Member 4 Copy that indicates characterization of service.
