THE POSITION

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is seeking a Comparative Science Supervisor to oversee the comparative sciences sections of the Crime Laboratory.  The Hennepin County Sheriff's Crime Laboratory is an ASCLD/LAB International accredited testing crime laboratory that provides forensic services to 35 law enforcement agencies, the Minnesota State Patrol, and multiple federal law enforcement agencies.  The Comparative Sciences Supervisor will oversee operations of both the Latent Fingerprint and Firearm and Toolmark sections of the laboratory, and will report to the Laboratory Director.

The HCSO is dedicated to public safety and service as guardians in the community through leadership, integrity, and strong partnerships.
 
The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:
•   Coordinate laboratory activities, including scheduling work assignments, establishing work priorities, and directing the work of laboratory staff.
•   Supervise section staff, including report review, performance evaluation, assignment balance, and employee discipline.
•   Direct laboratory staff in the research and validation of new techniques, procedures, methods, and equipment used in the laboratory.
•   Initiate corrective and preventative actions to address potential problems and facilitate the continuous improvement of the laboratory quality systems.
•   Assist with the administration of laboratory training.
•   Assist in preparation of budget and management of expenditure.
•   Develop reports and other documents.
•   Testify in court regarding laboratory operations; monitor and evaluate the court testimony of laboratory personnel.
Best Qualified Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have:
•   Bachelor's degree or higher in forensic science, chemistry, toxicology, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or a closely related field and three years or more of work experience in a comparative science as an analyst or supervisor in an accredited forensic laboratory.
•   Knowledge of goals and objectives relating to the major functions of a forensics laboratory.
•   Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
•   Ability to:
o   Plan, assign, and direct the work of staff.
o   Work effectively with peers and with multiple levels of stakeholders within an organization.

Applicants must have no felony convictions and must successfully complete drug test and an extensive background investigation that includes criminal, employment and financial checks during the six-month probationary period.
