Job Description
The Criminalistics Laboratory Division of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a qualified applicant for a position in our Firearm & Toolmark Section.
The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to, functionality/operability testing of firearms, microscopic comparison of fired ammunition components, imaging samples into the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) and review of correlation results, restoration of obliterated serial numbers, gunshot residue distance determination, and microscopic comparison of toolmarks to recovered tools. Other duties include preparing written technical reports and providing scientific consultation and expert testimony in courts of law.
This position will be hired as a Forensic Scientist (FS) Level I, II or III depending upon experience and education.

Job Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, criminalistics/forensic science, natural science, or any other closely related field with laboratory science coursework is required. Preference will be given to applicants that have an advanced degree.

Experience with ANAB ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation program requirements is desired. Membership in the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) is preferred. The applicant will be required to successfully complete a laboratory training program and competency testing prior to beginning independent casework responsibilities.

FS I – (Not a trainee position) Experience must include successful completion of a formal Firearm & Toolmark training program. Independent Firearm & Toolmark casework experience is preferred.

FS II – Three years of forensic experience with at least two years of independent Firearm & Toolmark casework experience, or two years of forensic experience with at least one year of independent Firearm & Toolmark casework experience plus an advanced degree. Experience must include successful completion of a formal Firearm & Toolmark training program.

FS III – Eight years of forensic experience with at least six years of independent Firearm & Toolmark casework experience, or seven years of forensic experience with at least five years of independent Firearm & Toolmark casework experience plus an advanced degree.

Depending upon the successful candidate's experience, this position may be filled at Forensic Scientist - Level 1, 2 or 3.  The full pay range is $27.28 to $42.58 (hourly equivalent), depending on level.
