Job Description
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory is seeking a qualified applicant for a Forensic Scientist position in our Firearm & Toolmark Section. The major duties of this position include but are not limited to, functionality/operability testing of firearms, microscopic comparison of fired ammunition components, imaging samples into the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) and review of correlation results, restoration of obliterated serial numbers, gunshot residue distance determination, and microscopic comparison of toolmarks to recovered tools.  The duties also include maintaining laboratory records, writing laboratory reports, and providing expert courtroom testimony. 

This position will be hired as a Forensic Scientist (FS) Level I, II or III depending upon experience and education.  The salary ranges, minimum FS I to maximum FS III, are $27.28 - $42.58 ($56,742.40 – 88,566.40 annualized).

Job Requirements
Educational requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Forensic Science related area.

Preferred qualifications: Independent casework experience as a proficiency tested Firearm & Toolmark examiner in an accredited forensic laboratory; membership in the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE).

Experience requirements for Forensic Scientist I: Less than three years of experience or the equivalent as a Forensic Scientist I in a forensic laboratory.  An advanced degree (e.g. master’s or doctorate) or certification by a nationally recognized forensic organization may be credited towards one year of experience (2 yrs. + 1).  Experience must include successful completion of a formal Firearm & Toolmark Training program or a portion thereof within a forensic laboratory.  Salary range: $27.28 - 34.91 ($56,742.40 - $72,612.80 annualized).

Experience requirements for Forensic Scientist II: At least three (3) years of experience or the equivalent as a Forensic Scientist I in a forensic laboratory.  An advanced degree (e.g. master’s or doctorate) or certification by a nationally recognized forensic organization may be credited towards one year of experience (2 yrs. + 1).  Must have forensic experience and work history as a proficiency tested Firearm & Toolmark casework examiner in an accredited forensic laboratory.  Salary range: $30.76 - 40.14 ($63,980.80 - $83,491.20 annualized).

Experience requirements for Forensic Scientist III: At least eight (8 ) years of experience or the equivalent as a Forensic Scientist I and/or Forensic Scientist II in a forensic laboratory.  An advanced degree (e.g. master’s or doctorate) and/or certification by a nationally recognized forensic organization may be credited towards one year of experience for each achievement (6 yrs. + 1 + 1).  Must have forensic experience and work history as a proficiency tested Firearm & Toolmark casework examiner in an accredited forensic laboratory. Salary range: $32.63 - 42.58 ($67,870.40 - $88,566.40 annualized).
