 This position is located in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (ODMPSJ), in the Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS), Forensic Science Laboratory Division (FSLD), Firearms Examination Unit (FEU). The mission of DFS is to provide high-quality, timely, accurate, and reliable forensic science services using best practices and best available technology, focusing on unbiased science and transparency, to enhance public safety and health. The Firearms Examination Unit is responsible for providing functional, microscopic, and chemical examinations on firearms and firearm related evidence.
The overall functions of this position are to oversee the planning and daily operations of the Firearms Examination Unit and supervise and support a team of professional and administrative staff to attain the performance target and objectives of the unit.
Duties and Responsibilities
 
 The Firearms Examination Supervisor supervises the technical operations of the FEU laboratory and ensures that the methodologies and procedures used in performing casework are in compliance with established standards and accreditation requirements and remains appropriate and relevant in the context of emerging technologies. In addition, the FEU Supervisor reviews work, utilizes employees to accomplish work objectives and uses quantitative and qualitative measures for evaluating work performance of staff. Formulates overall plans for resources, approves and denies leave requests, recommending job selections, promotions, incentive recognition, and corrective or adverse actions, establishes work standards and identifies development and training needs.
The incumbent ensures that the heavy volume of daily work as well as difficult special demands are scheduled and processed effectively; and that personal services, equipment, and materials are used to the best interest of the laboratory, department, and the District of Columbia. Establishes liaisons with organizations and institutions within and outside of the District and maintains satisfactory working arrangement. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes; and works collectively, cooperatively, and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Qualifications and Education
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-12 grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, including but not limited to: applying Firearms and Toolmark analysis, techniques, and standards, conducting and overseeing research and implementation of new laboratory analytical procedures, and identifying issues and training needs.

Working Conditions/Environment
The work is performed in an office and laboratory.  The office setting is when preparing documentation, and the laboratory setting is during the testing and analysis phase.
Other Significant Factors
Tour of Duty: 8:30am to 5:00pm. May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS).
MSS At-Will Statement:  Positions in the Management Supervisory Service (MSS) serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Designation: This position has been deemed Security Sensitive under the guideline of the DC Personnel Manual. Incumbents of this position are subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC personnel regulations. Accordingly, incumbents must successfully pass a criminal background and consumer credit check as a condition of employment and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of their tenure.
This position has been designated Emergency under the guidelines of the DC Personnel Manual, pursuant to Chapter 12 of DC personnel regulations. Accordingly, incumbents must report to work or remain at work if activated, during a declared emergency.
Incumbents are required to successfully complete competency testing prior to beginning casework on any equipment or instrument in a specialty discipline or sub-discipline.
