Lab work dress code

Would anybody be willing to share their current dress code when performing work in the lab?


Not PPE requirements, but what clothing, hair, facial hair and tattoo policies does your lab have?

Basically Biz-Casual, no jeans (except Fridays) or "athletic shoes" and as a practical matter cargo pants & polo shirts or scrubs for those of us not preparing for court or public exposure.

Most of us wear lab issued scrubs and tennis shoes. Business casual if not. Tattoos are allowed as long as they are not on the hands, face, or neck. Facial hair must be 'neat and closely trimmed no longer than 2 inches".

In the lab pretty much anything of common sense - jeans, scrubs, athletic shoes, boots, t-shirts. We cannot wear open toe shoes, graphic tee shirts with inappropriate logos/wording, shirts that expose midriff or shoulders, shorts. But the lab is so cold all the time, most of us wear long pants and sweaters. Evidence receiving has to wear agency-provided logo t-shirts and polo shirts.
If we are going to training or meetings, business causal.

We are the same as Stacey's!  Down to the freezing cold lab part    Most of us stick to jeans, t-shirts/sweatshirts, and athletic shoes.  We don't have a lab dress code policy (we technically fall under the PD/City's policy).

Ours changes depending on which overlord has been appointed in the CoC.   
In general, jeans and now even T-shirts are fine unless you have a known public interaction in which case biz casual at a minimum is required.

From our personnel handbook:

All clothing must be in good condition without tears, rips, or holes. No hats or caps are to be worn in the building. Inappropriate attire includes, but not limited to, clothing or jewelry that displays cartoons; obscene gestures; offensive language; or illegal substances; or that promotes political beliefs; ridicules or belittles any person or group; discriminates against any person or group; or that contains derogatory comments about the workplace.

General Work Attire for all employees
§  Dress shirt, polo shirt, or T-shirt
§  Slacks or jeans[1]
§  Casual or athletic shoes (Shoes must cover the entire foot in Laboratory Working Areas; see Appendix A Health & Safety Manual)
Court Attire
§  Men
o   Suit or sports coat with slacks
o   Shirt with tie
o   Dress shoes
§  Women
o   Pant/skirt-suit, dress pants/skirt with dress shirt, or conservative dress
o   Dresses/skirts must be knee-length
o   Dress shoes
Scheduled internal/external meetings with court officials
§  Business casual

Employees who have changed into exercise clothes to work out must change into appropriate clothing before returning to the laboratory work area.
When an employee fails to meet these standards, that employee's supervisor is responsible for informing the employee that he or she must change into appropriate clothing before continuing any laboratory activity. If the problem persists, then the employee will be subject to progressive disciplinary action.

We are pretty easy going in our lab since, for the most part, we see the same beautiful smiling faces everyday.


Business casual - jeans are allowed and the most common you will see in the lab (except if we have to be at the academy or court/pretrial), no logos/nothing offensive, clothing must be appropriate and not show midriff, in good condition with no tears, holes, or rips, no open toed shoes. Our policy does state that it is recommended we keep a suit/professional attire on hand for court/pretrial which most of us do. The department also issues a department uniform (khakis and polo) but most of us do not wear those. From a female perspective, they never fit right.

Hair must be of a natural color, well groomed facial hair, tattoos must be approved. No visible tattoos on face or neck. No facial jewelry.

Analysts can wear blue scrubs or may opt for jeans...t-shirts of a not offensive variety.  Supervisors are generally business casual.  Tattoos are not addressed.
