The Police Department is currently seeking highly qualified individuals to fill a vacant Firearms Technician position, grade P-17, in the Firearms Examination.
This is a technical support position assigned to the Firearms Examination Unit. The incumbent receives firearms-related evidence submitted by law enforcement personnel, conducts data entry and limited analysis. Work assignments require knowledge of the Personnel Law, Departmental General Orders, the Standard Operating Procedures of the Firearms Examination Unit, general computer skills for data entry and the ability to communicate well with others. The incumbent performs assigned duties and responsibilities in accordance with the established performance standards. The incumbent treats all personnel and personnel related matters as strictly confidential.
TYPICAL DUTIES: The selected candidate test-fires weapons; enters all firearms test shots and crime scene evidence into the IBIS (Integrated Ballistic Identification System) database; receives and processes all pertinent firearm-related evidence and enters pertinent data into the FEU database; coordinates examination requests and the transport of evidentiary items between the FEU and other departmental sections/units and outside agencies; and attends court to testify whenever subpoenaed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or G.E.D., plus one (1) year’s completion of coursework in the maintenance and operation of firearms and toolmark; or equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must be able to prove that he/she successfully completed the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) training course.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Must pass a thorough background investigation.
2. Must meet departmental physical requirements.
3. Must be able to meet requirements established by the Maryland State Police for issuance of a handgun permit (Article 27, Section 36E).
4. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors.
5. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligibles, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
