Description of Work
THIS IS A NON-SWORN POSITION LOCATED IN THE FIREARMS SECTION OF THE STATE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. THE FORENSIC FIREARMS ANALYST WILL DETERMINE IF A PARTICULAR FIRED AMMUNITION COMPONENT WAS FIRED IN OR FROM A SPECIFIC WEAPON, MUZZLE-TO-TARGET DISTANCE, AMMUNITION COMPONENT RECOGNITION, FIREARM FUNCTION, RESTORE OBLITERATED SERIAL NUMBERS; DETERMINE IF EVIDENCE TOOL MARKS WERE MADE BY A SPECIFIC TOOL AND GIVE EXPERT TESTIMONY ABOUT THE FINDINGS. REGULAR WORK HOURS ARE NORMALLY 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PM. COURT AND SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS CAN CAUSE ANALYST'S TO WORK IRREGULAR HOURS. ANALYSTS MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK MANDATORY OVERTIME IN ADDITION; THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO BE ON-CALL ON A ROTATION

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
CONSIDERABLE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES, CONCEPTS, THEORIES, REFERENCE SOURCES AND LABORATORY PRACTICES INVOLVED IN THE FORENSIC EXAMINATION AND ANALYSIS OF FIREARMS AND TOOL-MARKS. CONSIDERABLE KNOWLEDGE OF FIREARMS AMMUNITION AND OF THE RELATED MECHANICS.
WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF TOOLS, LABORATORY SAFETY PRACTICES CRIMINAL LAWS AND OF THE RULES AND REGULATIONS REGARDING EVIDENCE GATHERING AND HANDLING. ABILITY TO ANALYZE RESULTS INTERPRET AND DEVELOP METHODOLOGY, AND TO UNDERSTAND AND SOLVE THEORETICAL PROBLEMS. ABILITY TO BREAK DOWN, REPAIR AND ASSEMBLE FIREARMS, TAKE PRECISE MEASUREMENTS AND TO MICROSCOPICALLY COMPARE VERY MINUTE DIFFERENCES. ABILITY TO EXPRESS TECHNICAL INFORMATION CLEARLY BOTH ORALLY AND IN WRITING TO PERCEIVE COLORS NORMALLY AND TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS.
Training and Experience Requirements
GRADUATION FROM A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY WITH A MAJOR IN FORENSIC SCIENCE, FORENSIC STUDIES, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY OR MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY AND A MINIMUM OF TWO YEARS PROGRESSIVE EXPERIENCE IN FORENSIC FIREARMS AND TOOLMARKS EXAMAINATION AND ANALYSIS; OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND DIRECTLY RELATED EXPERIENCE.
***MANAGEMENT PREFERENCE: MANAGEMENT PREFERS A CANDIDATE WHO HAS FORENSIC LABORATORY EXPERIENCE IN THE EXAMINATION OF FIREARMS AND TOOL MARKS.
***TRAINEE: A TRAINEE APPOINTMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED AT A LESSER SALARY FOR AN APPLICANT NOT MEETING THE MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE FOR THE FULL CLASSIFICATION.
