The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking four qualified applicants to serve as Firearms & Toolmarks examiners in three of our regional laboratories located in Richmond, Norfolk, and Manassas. The incumbents are responsible to examine, compare and evaluate a wide variety of items such as various firearms, unfired ammunition, fired components, clothing, tools and objects bearing toolmarks. Testify in courts of law as experts on examinations performed. Work with examiners, officials and law enforcement personnel during analytical examinations to support criminal investigations. Job requires some travel.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree; experience as a Forensic Scientist qualified in firearm & toolmark examinations; experience testifying in court as an expert in the field; successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency; ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately analyze, interpret data and develop conclusions; ability to precisely explain and defend scientific results both verbally and in writing; knowledge of laboratory safety and QA/QC procedures; valid driver's license and/or other means of reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications Experience using the NIBIN network; membership in and/or certification by AFTE; experience working in an accredited forensic science laboratory; and familiarity with ASCLD/LAB accreditation criteria. Applicants should be prepared for oral and/or practical examinations during the interview.
Special Requirements Selected candidates must provide a DNA sample via a buccal swab (saliva sample), be fingerprinted and pass a security background check.
Special Instructions to Applicants In the event four fully qualified Forensic Scientist candidates cannot be employed, trainee positions will be offered to the most suited candidates at a salary of $39,175. Upon successful completion of training, the trainee's salary will be established within the salary range for a qualified Forensic Scientist. The training will take place at the Central Laboratory in Richmond, and will last approximately 24 months, dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidates. Upon completion of training, trainees will be assigned to the regional laboratory with the greatest need.
