There is an anticipated opeing for an Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS) Support Technician (entry level $3,541.00 monthly / $20.43 hourly) (civilian) position within the Harris County Sheriff's Office Firearms Identification Laboratory.

Job Summary and Purpose of Assignment:
Receives, inventories, and evaluates various types of firearms. Test fires specific calibers and types of firearms for entry into the IBIS database. Acts as the primary evidence custodian for the Firearms Laboratory. This position is intended to serve as an entry-level position into the field of Firearms and Tool Mark Identification.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Laboratory responsibilities to include, but not limited to:
1. Inventories, documents and evaluates various types of fire-arms for possible
entry into the IBIS database.
2. Test fires appropriate calibers and types of firearms.
3. Serial Number Restorations (firearms only).
4. Issue reports accurately reflecting the results of examinations.
5. Receives, releases and maintains evidence submitted for examination.
B. Courtroom responsibilities include, but not limited to: Testimony in any court of law as a witness to chain of custody and or result of laboratory examination.
C. Integrated Ballistics Identification System responsibilities:
1. Understanding of imaging of evidence into system.
2. Ability to process correlated images.
3. Assist in managing system.
D. Must keep abreast of new advances in firearms industry.
E. Must be available for shift assignments and or on-call duty.
Educational/Experience Requirements:
-Must have a Bachelor of Science degree from a four year accredited institution with a major in the natural or physical sciences (forensic science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, material science etc.)
Preferred Qualifications (The following qualifications are NOT mandatory but will be given additional consideration):
-Prior work experience or internship in a Firearms Identification Laboratory.
-Experience in a Firearms Laboratory and utilization of the IBIS technology.
