The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking a qualified applicant to serve as a Firearms & Toolmarks examiner in the Western Regional Laboratory, located in Roanoke, Virginia. The Forensic Scientist is responsible to examine, compare and evaluate a wide variety of items such as various firearms, unfired ammunition, fired components, clothing, tools and objects bearing toolmarks. Testify in courts of law as experts on examinations performed. Work with examiners, officials and law enforcement personnel during analytical examinations to support criminal investigations. Job requires some travel.
Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience as a qualified Forensic Scientist conducting examinations on firearm & toolmark evidence. Experience testifying in court as an expert in the field. Successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency. Ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately analyze, interpret data and develop conclusion. Ability to precisely explain and defend scientific results both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of laboratory safety and QA/QC procedures. Valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation. Applicants should be prepared for oral and/or practical examinations during the interview.
Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in math, science, engineering or closely related field. Experience using the NIBIN network; membership in and/or certification by AFTE; experience working in an accredited forensic science laboratory; and familiarity with ASCLD/LAB accreditation criteria.
If a fully qualified Forensic Scientist candidate cannot be found, the position will be filled as a Forensic Scientist Trainee at a salary of $44,472. The training will last approximately 24 months, dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. The trainee position requires a 2 year probationary period. Trainee required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Trainee preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in math, science, engineering or closely related field. Participation in an internship or work experience as a technician within a firearm & toolmark section of an accredited laboratory.
