FIREARMS AND TOOLMARKS SECTION SUPERVISOR
Position CF114
Salary: $82,679 – $105,522
Manassas, VA

 
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science, Northern Laboratory, is seeking a qualified applicant to supervise the Firearms and Toolmarks section in the day-to-day operations of the section. Duties include management of the section backlog and compliance to accreditation standards, and state and agency policies and procedures. Will also independently perform comprehensive scientific analyses on a diversity of evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies; use state of the art knowledge of methodologies, techniques and instrumentation related to the analysis of firearms & toolmarks; interpret results and prepare reports of findings for use by the criminal justice system; prepare court exhibits and testify in court as an expert witness; maintain the firearms reference collection and technical reference files; communicate with medical and legal officials on testing procedures, results, and conclusions; and instruct law enforcement officials on the handling of evidence. Requires some travel.

Required Qualifications: B.A./B.S. degree required. Successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency in the examination of firearms and toolmarks. Experience using basic laboratory equipment and analytical instrumentation, with courtroom testimony as an expert in the field. Knowledge of basic theoretical principles and applications of the instrumentation and methodologies used to analyze firearms & toolmarks. Ability to communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and in writing, and defend scientific findings in court. Knowledge of criminal court procedures and rules of evidence. Must be eligible to possess a valid driver’s license or have other means of reliable transportation. Preferred Qualifications: Membership in the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE). Certification by the AFTE. Experience with the NIBIN/IBIS. Experience in forensic-related teaching/training. Supervisory experience, to include experience supervising technical staff.
