Firearms Criminalist I/II (opens 11/27/2009)

The San Diego Police Department is seeking applicants for a Firearms Criminalist position.  The San Diego Police Department Crime Lab is a full-service ASCLD/LAB accredited forensic laboratory serving the city of San Diego (population 1.3 million).  The Firearms section of the laboratory has four criminalists when fully staffed.  This position will be grant-funded.

Responsibilities:
The Firearms Criminalist is responsible for performing examinations of firearms, bullets, and cartridge cases; conducting comparison examinations regarding spent projectiles, spent cartridge cases and shot shells; performing data entry function for the Integrated Ballistics Identification System; conducting research, method development  and validation of new technical procedures; performing chemical restoration of obliterated serial numbers and other markings on weapons; performing distance determinations in casework; responding to crime scenes for scene reconstruction, including officer-involved shootings; determining violations of assault weapons laws, silencer laws, etc.; taking notes and generating reports; testifying to findings in California and Federal courts; and assisting with quality assurance duties of the section.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Institution in a physical science, biological science, criminalistics, forensic science, or a related field is required.  We are looking for a journey level criminalist who has at least 2 years full-time criminalistics experience in firearms in a public or private crime laboratory performing firearms examinations and comparisons.  Experience in IBIS entry, crime scene reconstruction, including wound ballistics, digital photography, and experience using imaging software and crime scene sketching software is desirable.  Membership in the Association of Toolmark and Firearms Examiners is also recommended. The monthly salary range for a Criminalist II is $6267 to $7571.
