CRIMINALIST II – Firearms/Toolmark Section

This is technical and advanced professional level laboratory work in a specialized field relating to crime analysis.  Work involves the application of laboratory techniques, materials, equipment and instruments used in various physical and chemical analyses of evidence obtained at crime scenes or elsewhere, and the presentation of findings for investigative and prosecution purposes.  This position also conducts complex analyses that require subjective opinions and/or is required to use complex instrumentation.  Work is performed in accordance with standardized laboratory methods and controls to ensure accurate and verifiable analyses of specimens. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general direction of a supervisor.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Conducts examinations and comparisons of firearms, firearm related evidence, toolmarks, shoe prints, tire tracks, and physical fit evidence which are related to criminal investigations.

Operates complex laboratory equipment; uses advanced laboratory techniques; stays current in the forensic field by reading and attending meetings and schools.

Completes reports of results of analyses and communicates results to appropriate department personnel.

Provides expert court testimony relating to results of analyses; photographs and prepares graphic illustrations for court use; consults with and advises District Attorney and other law enforcement officials in forensic matters.

Formulates independent conclusions; sets priorities; prepares reports.

Maintains safe conditions in the laboratory and conducts laboratory procedures in accordance with ASCLDLAB policies.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science or forensic science from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in math, chemistry, biology and/or physics.

Possess a minimum of three years of experience in firearms identification casework at the Criminalist I level or higher.

Ability to effectively testify in court as an expert witness.

Thorough knowledge of advanced laboratory techniques, materials, equipment and instrument operation related to firearms identification.

Thorough knowledge of the methods used in collecting and preserving physical evidence and presentation of such evidence in court.

Ability to effectively coordinate the completion of analyses by subordinate staff using a variety of techniques.

Ability to effectively communicate with representatives of other law enforcement agencies and legal officials.

SALARY

Negotiable $56,000 to $65,000 with Annual Performance Salary Adjustment
