Help id headstamp/cartridge....
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:50:18 PM »
I need help with these cartridges. I received them in a box of misc stuff. Although priding myself on knowing a good bit about guns, I dont know what these are and cant find anything. I've tried researching the headstamp, and thats what brought me here.Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From the photographs it looks like a 9.5x60Rmm Turkish Mauser to me.

Paul,

I am leaning more toward the 11,15 x 60R Mauser M.1871-84
The length of the neck seems to be about right.
The bullet diameter looks that it is ~ 11 - 12 mm and it has the typical Mauser base.

11 mm Gras could be the next best option (but not as good).

I have a hard time seeing the symbol at the bottom of the headstamp.
A detailed picture would help.
By the arrangement and type of headstamp I would think about an Austrian manufacturer of the 1887 era.

Greetings

Axel

WOW...that was exactly what I was thinking, Axel!   ;D

Actually, I just looked at CartWinPro and saw the Austrian headstamps but I couldn't make out the bottom symbol to seal the deal...so I decided to wait on the Kartridge King to decipher the information.   :-00

Thank you Tori  :D

I live 50 miles of the Austrian border so we see these things probably a bit more often....
But I am still interested to see the symbol at the bottom more detailed.

Greetings

Axel

Hi There,

The thread got me pretty darn excited and prompted a discussion with the resident ammo expert here at work.

Could it perhaps be the 11.15x58R Austrian Mannlicher for the Manlicher M 1886? The charger is consistent with the M1886 Mannlicher as presented in "Patronen" by Lenselink, Wanting and Hek, and the rough measurements from the photo are consistent with everything we can find on that particular cartridge.

I can scan the image from "Patronen" if people are curious about it.

Additionally I have heard that this particular text is available in English somewhere (The copy that my coworker has is in Dutch). Anyone have any idea where I might find an english copy if they do infact exist?

Just a thought,

Chris

The symbol at the bottom is hard to make out....even with a magnifying glass (nothing professional of course). Looks like a  "T" or "F" over a "B" or "AB". Thanks for the help folks! Maybe this will help.....

We probably need the exact measurements of the cartridge for an ID.
The 11,15x58R seems to have a longer taper of the neck and the beginning of the taper is ~ 33 mm from the base. The 11,15x60R starts at ~37 mm.
Please measure the distance from the headstamp to the beginning of the taper.

But again, we need good measurements.
The cut out from the above picture of the headstamp is not helping a lot.
Please try to get a better picture

Greetings
Axel

Tried everything I know to get a better picture with the equipment I have (or lack thereof). Measurement from base to beginning of neck taper is 37mm. Thanks again.

If you've got a flat bed scanner lying around, you could scan the headstamp. It's worked for me when I've needed photos of small gun parts and headstamps in the past.

Thanks Chris. I dont have one here but will give that a try tomorrow. After more digging on the 11.15x60, I am pretty sure thats what I have here...maybe more commonly referred to as "43 Mauser". Thanks again for everyone's help.

For what it is worth I agree with Chris Kerr it is Austrian, an 11.15x58R Austrian Mannlicher for the Manlicher M 1886, clip & headstamp are correct for that.
