THE POSITION
The Sheriff’s Department is recruiting for Criminalists II who perform laboratory examinations of physical evidence to establish facts of criminal investigations, and participate in crime scene investigations using forensic knowledge and techniques in gathering, preserving, and examining physical evidence. Criminalists II perform full-scope journey-level forensic analysis and are expected to have specialized expertise in such areas as DNA/serology, toolmarks/firearms, and/or trace evidence (hair, fibers, paint, etc.).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1) Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony. Prior to appointment, candidates will be fingerprinted and must pass a background investigation and a medical examination, which includes a drug test. 2) Incumbents may be required to work, or to be on call for work, on weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights. On-call employees must be able to report for duty within one hour after being paged. 3) Incumbents conducting investigations in the field must be able to climb up and down embankments and hike over rough terrain. 4) Travel throughout the county is required; employees may be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation. 5) Some positions in this classification may be assigned to a schedule of less than full time (80 hours) per two-week pay period.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: A baccalaureate degree (or higher) in a natural or physical science, criminalistics or a closely related field. (Specific coursework is required per ASCLD-LAB Accreditation Standards; complete the Supplemental Questionnaire.)

--AND--

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in a law enforcement forensic laboratory with expertise in performing analysis, comparison and identification of typical forensic samples in the following: Firearms/Toolmarks, DNA/Serology, Trace Evidence, Toxicology, Solid Dose Drug Analysis, or Alcohol Analysis.

For DNA positions: Additional coursework in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology is also required, as well as either coursework in population genetics, or coursework or training in statistics.
For Firearms positions: Completion of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) National Firearms Examiner Academy may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience. A high-quality copy of completion certificate must accompany transcripts.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in Firearms/Toolmarks and DNA/Serology are particularly desirable.
