THE POSITION
The Office of the Sheriff is actively recruiting to fill one (1) immediate Deputy Sheriff Criminalist position in the Firearms/Toolmarks Unit of the Forensic Services Division. Deputy Sheriff Criminalist I is eligible to move to Deputy Sheriff-Criminalist II level after two years ($5,558-6,756). The Forensic Services Division includes a full-service criminalistics laboratory, fingerprint identification unit, and Property and Evidence service unit. The Criminalist series also includes journey level Deputy Sheriff Criminalist III ($6,436 - $7,823). New hires will be assigned to the Criminalistics Section in Martinez, California and will be required to serve an eighteen (18) month probation period. Criminalists are peace officers who use scientific instrumentation, photography and computers to examine evidence from crime scenes. The position is responsible for field investigation of crime scenes, collection of evidence and laboratory examination of evidence. Scientific results are presented as expert testimony in court.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Age Requirement: At least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
License Required: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in the field of criminalistics, chemistry, biochemistry or a closely related natural science field which must have included 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of general chemistry and two courses in organic chemistry. Chemistry courses must have included laboratory sections. Unofficial transcripts required with application.
Summer 2004 GRADUATES: Persons currently enrolled in a college or university who will complete all degree requirements, not later than June 2004, may apply and will be included in the examination process for Deputy Sheriff Criminalist I. However, they will not be eligible for referral until Human Resources receives verification that all the education requirements have been met.
ALL MEDICAL STANDARDS ARE RIGIDLY ENFORCED
Physical Requirement: Ability to meet such health standards as may be prescribed by the County Medical Consultant including no deficiency in the ability to distinguish colors.
Hearing: Must not have suffered a hearing loss of over 25 decibels in the 500, 1000 and 2000 frequency ranges.
Visual Acuity: 20/100 uncorrected each eye; corrected to 20/30 each eye.
Background Requirement: A thorough background investigation shall be conducted according to the specification on the State of California Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training. Appointees shall not have been convicted of any felony in this state or in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, or of an offense in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state.
Certificate Required: Within twelve (12) months from the date of appointment, applicant must successfully complete a POST certified Police Academy program and obtain a valid Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate (POST) issued by the State of California. Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
SELECTION PROCESS
Application Filing: A completed Contra Costa County application and unofficial transcripts must be received or postmarked by May 14, 2004. Transcripts from non U.S. institutions must be accompanied by an equivalency statement prepared by an authorized agency. Oral Interview: All accepted applicants will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez. Candidates will be evaluated on technical knowledge of scientific methodology, instruments and procedures; ability to communicate in an articulate manner; Job Motivation and Interest and Interpersonal Skills. Candidates must receive a score of 70 from a majority of the Board members to be ranked on the employment list. (Weighted 100%.)
The Human Resources Department may make changes to the examination steps noted above in accordance with Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
