Salary: $51,142 - $83,860
Location: Richmond

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking a qualified applicant to serve as a Firearms & Toolmarks examiner in the Central Regional Laboratory, located in Richmond, Virginia. The Forensic Scientist is responsible for the following: to examine, compare and evaluate a wide variety of items such as various firearms, unfired ammunition, fired components, clothing, tools, and objects bearing toolmarks; to testify in courts of law as an expert on examinations performed; and to work with examiners, officials, and law enforcement personnel during analytical examinations to support criminal investigations. This position requires some travel.

Required qualifications: Bachelorís degree; experience as a qualified Forensic Scientist conducting examinations on firearm & toolmark evidence; experience testifying in court as an expert in the field; successful completion of a documented training program and/or demonstration of competency; ability to work independently, set priorities and work efficiently, keep accurate records, accurately analyze, interpret data and develop conclusions; ability to precisely explain and defend scientific results both verbally and in writing; knowledge of laboratory safety and QA/QC procedures; valid driverís license and/or other means of reliable transportation. Applicants should be prepared for oral and/or practical examinations during the interview.

Preferred qualifications: Experience using the NIBIN network; membership in and/or certification by AFTE; experience working in an accredited forensic science laboratory; and familiarity with ASCLD/LAB accreditation criteria.
