Help in viewing Member forum

I joined the AFTE discussion board prior to becoming an AFTE member.  As a result I can only see the public side.  I have tried to update my profile so that I am now an AFTE member and I am clearly missing how to do it.  I tried to do some private messaging but for some reason I can't do that either.  Can anyone help me out on how to update my profile to a member so that I can view the "private" side of the forum?
