JOB TITLE:    Firearms – Laboratory Manager

DEPARTMENT: Sheriff's Office – Investigative Support Division

The largest Sheriff’s Department in Texas and third most populous county in America, is searching for a Firearms and Tool mark Examiner.
         
HOURS: Flexible (Available for Shift Assignments and/or On-Call Duty)

SALARY: $4,988.00


BENEFITS:  Excellent retirement investment rate, deferred compensation program, health, dental and vision coverage, disability coverage; 10 days sick leave per year, 3 days funeral leave per year, 3 days family leave per year, 2 weeks vacation per year for first 5 years, three weeks per year after fifth year and then four weeks per year after fifteenth year.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Must have a Bachelor’s degree from a four (4) year institution with a preferred major in natural, physical, social, or computer science.  Have extensive experience working as a qualified Firearms Examiner within a comparable size Firearms Laboratory; prefer supervisory experience with a firearms laboratory.  Have expert knowledge of all types/characteristics of handguns, long arms, ammunitions and propellants; knowledge of ballistics, including firearms trajectory analysis and effects of close/long range shooting characteristics; understanding of effects of fired bullets and cartridges on wide variety materials, including human tissue; complete knowledge of examination procedures, awareness of the methodologies of courts and investigative/scientific personnel.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsible for the effective professional and administrative operation of the Sheriff Office’s Regional Ballistics/Firearms Identification Laboratory.  Assigns duties and manages the daily operations and conduct of the Firearms Laboratory.  The Firearms Examiner/Laboratory Manager must supervise and train the laboratory staff; reports to a designated supervisor. Responsible for continuous review and establishment of the Lab’s operational policies, procedures and applicable accreditation standards.  Ensures personnel maintain optimum effective and efficient operations/technical competencies with Lab. Coordinates liaison divisions of Sheriff’s Office, Medical Examiner’s Office and outside agencies.  Prepares mandated reports/documents as required. Ensures compliance of lab with all HCSO Departmental, Bureau and Division. Provides firearms/tool mark examination services for the Southeast Texas Region.  Keeps abreast of all advances within the firearms industry.  Monitors and conducts forensic testing of evidence and evaluates the mechanical condition of all weapons submitted to laboratory.  Understands imaging of evidence into system; assists in managing system, supports remote sites through examinations/technical assistance.  Responds to complex and Officer-Involved shooting scenes as directed by Crime Scene Unit Supervisor.
