MANAGERIAL CRIMINALIST

The Managerial Criminalist, M-II in the Firearms Analysis Section, will be directly responsible for method development and validation, new instrument qualifications, and the supervision of the training of new personnel. Extensive experience in all aspects of firearms and tool mark examination, particularly in firearms microscopy, which entails the comparison of discharged cases and projectiles, is required. Candidates should be familiar with the Police Crime Laboratory’s quality management system and ASCLD/LAB accreditation requirements.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology, or a closely related scientific or engineering field, and four (4) years of full time experience working in the area of criminalistics, forensic science, or analytical chemistry, 18 months of which must be managerial/supervisory in nature.

2. Education beyond the bachelor’s degree may be substituted for full time work experience at the rate of 18 graduate level credits for each year of full time work experience. Possession of a Ph.D. in a specialization listed above will be considered the equivalent of three (3) years full time experience. However, all candidates must have a minimum of 18 months of experience in the specialization area in a managerial/supervisory capacity.

Salary: Based upon work history.

New York City residency is not required for this position.

I worked there for 4 years and left about a year ago.

If anyone has any questions about working at the NYPD Firearms unit please feel free to contact me. I was assigned there as a Detective from 1989 through 1998 and as civilian forensic consultant for training from 2001 through 2005.

The NYPD Firearms Analysis Section has undergone a number of changes since 2005.
