Forensic Lab Supervisory – Firearms and Tool Marks (#64-17203)
Nebraska State Patrol Crime Laboratory, Lincoln, Nebraska

SALARY & GRADE

DUTIES
Analyze evidence in criminal cases relevant to firearms, tool marks, shoe prints and tire tread examinations.  This includes comparison of fired bullets/casings to suspect weapons, using the FBI General Rifling Characteristics File, determining caliber and type of bullet, firearms function testing, restoring obliterated serial numbers, gunshot residue/pattern testing on clothing, IBIS/NIBIN use, shoeprint comparisons, tire tread comparisons and fracture matching. Compose objective reports and provide clear court testimony regarding examination results. Read literature and attend relevant training. Supervise a NIBIN Technician and a Forensic Scientist Firearms/Tool Marks Examiner. Provide training when needed. Be responsible for the general organization, standard operating procedures and quality assurance requirements relevant to the Firearms/Tool Marks Section of the Laboratory.

MIN. QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice or a related area with science courses.  Court qualified forensic firearms/tool marks examiner with at least two years of apprenticeship training under a qualified examiner.  Member of the Association of Firearms and Tool Marks Examiners (AFTE).  Knowledge of computers for basic scientific and routine business purposes; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience with firearms/tool marks examination equipment and tools such as comparison microscopes, digital photography, GRC database, IBIS/NIBIN, chronographs, measuring devices, etc
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Two years experience as a qualified firearms and tool marks examiner doing independent case work and testifying in court; two years experience as a qualified examiner performing footwear and tire tread examinations and testifying in court; experience working in an ASCLD/LAB or ISO accredited laboratory, participating in proficiency testing and technical casework review; experience supervising others, speaking to groups and training an apprentice examiner.
