Forensic Scientist (Firearms Examiner)

The Denver Police Department currently has a position vacancy for a Forensic Scientist (Firearms Examiner).  

This position performs daily those functions necessary to process firearms, weapons and other objects for the identification and classification of cartridge cases, projectiles and tool marks for microscopic comparison and entry into the Integrated Ballistic Identification System Computer; performs powder residue and pattern test and serial number restoration.  Prepares reports and summaries; relays results of test to investigators; testifies in court and legal proceedings, and assumes responsibility for any other duties which may be delegated by a supervisor.

Qualified applicants must have a minimum of two years of professional criminalist and forensic analysis experience as a qualified firearms examiner.  Experience with ASCLAD/LAB accreditation standards as they pertain to firearms examination and knowledge of IBIS/NIBIN system operation is preferred.  Qualified applicants must also possess a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Criminalistics, Physics or a directly related natural science major.

A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements, that is, applicants who do not possess a college degree in the noted majors, but who have six years of professional criminalists and forensic analysis experience as a qualified firearms examiner, may qualify.  

The ideal candidate will have a degree in the noted fields, five years experience as a qualified Firearms Examiner and knowledge of firearms and other types of weapons; knowledge of ballistics; knowledge of computers; knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures with the ability to apply the knowledge to specific situations; knowledge of the rules of evidence; knowledge of Federal and State laws and City ordinances; and knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and duties governing specific assignments.

This is a limited position funded for one year.
