Firearms Examiner, Forensic Scientist
£27,034 - £33,315 • Central London
The 50,000 people who make up the Met are as different and diverse as the millions of Londoners they serve. But whoever they are, and whatever their role, they all work as one team with the aim of delivering quality policing that builds trust and makes London the world’s safest major city. Join them and thrive as part of the UK’s largest police service.
This is a rare opportunity for an experienced, qualified Firearms Examiner to gain a sought after role with NaBIS (National Ballistics Intelligence Service). Working at the NaBIS lab in London (one of three regional centres), you’ll be part of a newly established, well-resourced team designed to reduce armed criminality in the UK by providing a comprehensive firearms-related intelligence service to law enforcement agencies. So you’ll be using your skills as a Firearms Examiner and Forensic Scientist in the most rewarding and fulfilling way – providing valuable intelligence that helps to solve crimes and tackle gun violence.
The role means working on fascinating cases with a range of people; including police investigators, evidence recovery teams, specialist photographers and forensic experts on fingerprints, shoe prints and BPA. There are great opportunities for career development, including extensive training, the chance for scene and overseas work and the opportunity to mentor enthusiastic trainees.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include examining firearms and ammunition, test firing, performing comparison microscopy and working with IBIS technology. Following strict quality management procedures, you’ll establish potential intelligence links, write statements and appear in court. Clearly, you’ll need a proven track record as a Firearms Examiner and Forensic Scientist. You’ll also need good written and verbal communication skills, IT knowledge and the customer focus to meet the needs of investigations and the Criminal Justice System. That means having the enthusiasm, flexibility, initiative and organisational skills to prioritise a diverse workload, meeting tight deadlines as part of a team. Able to follow strict quality guidelines and demonstrate respect for race and diversity, you’ll ideally have a science or engineering degree.
In return, we offer a range of benefits that includes choice of pension scheme, interest-free season ticket loan, generous holidays and access to an active sports and social club.
