Position:  Firearms and Toolmark Examiner

Salary:  The salary for this position will depend on experience.   Hamilton County also offers an excellent retirement program and health benefits.

Location:  Cincinnati, Ohio

The Hamilton County Coroner’s Laboratory has an immediate opening for an experienced firearms examiner.  The laboratory is currently accredited under the ASCLD/LAB Legacy system and is preparing for an ASCLD/LAB International (ISO) assessment in April 2010.   The laboratory serves approximately 43 police agencies in a region of about 1 million people.  Job responsibilities include the normal microscopic comparison of firearms evidence, operation of the NIBIN/IBIS terminal, toolmark comparisons, distance determinations, serial number restorations, function tests, court testimony and training law enforcement personnel.  This position does NOT involve GSR (primer residues) analyses, footwear/tiretrack comparisons, or crime scene processing.  Normal working hours are 8 to 4:30 Monday through Friday with no “On-call.”  The examiner will join a staff of two other firearms examiners.  The examiner will be required to comply with safety, quality control, and other administrative criteria of the ASCLD/LAB accreditation program.  Hamilton County is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.  General information about the laboratory can be found at www.hamilton-co.org/coroner.

Qualifications:  
Examiners must be able to perform casework independently and be qualified to provide expert testimony in court.  Training and experience with the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) and membership in AFTE is desirable.
