The Colorado Department of Public Safety is comprised of six divisions; Executive Director's Office, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Division of Criminal Justice, the Division of Fire Safety, and Colorado Integrated Criminal Justice Information System. The primary mission of the Department of Public Safety is to provide a safe environment for the citizens of Colorado by maintaining, promoting and enhancing public safety through law enforcement, criminal investigations, fire and crime prevention, recidivism reduction, and victim advocacy. The current open position as announced below is with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation whose primary mission is to suppress crime, promote safety and security, and manage statewide criminal justice information; deliver excellence in criminal and background investigations, forensic laboratory services, and comprehensive criminal justice data management; and to build trusting relationships and partnerships within the state and in local communities to improve the quality of life in Colorado.

DUTIES: This position examines and compares forensic evidence related to firearms and toolmarks employing physical, microscopic, chemical, and photographic techniques. Assures proper procedures are applied by researching new techniques and reviewing forensic literature, maintains scientific instrument and photographic equipment, and writes standard operating procedures and training manuals. Completes quality assurance measures required in the Firearms Section. Communicates with attorneys, law enforcement officers, co-workers, and citizens in regard to evidence collected, testing employed, and interpretation of results. Instructs and supervises law enforcement officers regarding the significance of various types of physical evidence and proper evidence collection procedures. Travels statewide (to honor subpoenas) to present testimony in criminal court, as a professional and articulate representative of the CBI. Responds to requests for assistance at crime scenes. Evaluates scene, protects, gathers, secures, and transports physical evidence which may be hazardous, complex, perishable, or valuable in nature. Enforces the laws of the State of Colorado as an agent sworn with that responsibility.

REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in criminalistics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, physics, forensic science or a field related to the work assignment plus TWO YEARS of professional experience in forensic firearms analysis at the journeyman level using techniques specifically followed in forensic laboratories.

SUBSTITUTIONS: Applicant's work experience which provided the same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be willing to be fingerprinted, successfully pass a polygraph, drug test, psychological suitability test, and an extensive background investigation. If you have used any illegal drugs in the past three years, or have been convicted of a felony, or domestic violence, you will be disqualified and will not be hired.

FLSA: If the position is entitled to overtime pay, the applicant must be willing to accept compensatory time in lieu of overtime pay.
