Director of Physical Comparison Unit - Boston Police Department

Under the administrative direction of the Commander of the Forensic Group, plans, directs, coordinates and supervises the activities of the Boston Police Department Physical Comparison Unit (Latent Print and Firearms Analysis Sections).  Ensures staff is fully trained in scientifically accepted firearms examination procedures and latent print examination procedures.  Develops and maintains written operational procedures and standards consistent with SWGFAST, SWGGUN and other professional guidelines and recommendations.  Serves as senior technical subject matter expert within the Latent Prints Section and Firearms Analysis Section.  Develops and implements an annual budget.  Prepares analytical reports for requesting officers and appropriate courts of jurisdiction, and provides expert witness testimony as needed.  Other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a minimum of ten (10) years of full-time professional experience as a latent print examiner and/or firearms examiner of which three (3) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.  A bachelor's degree in forensic science, physical science, criminal justice, or a related field is required.  Must possess current Latent Print Examiner Certification from the International Association for Identification.  Must possess or be in the process of pursuing AFTE certification as a firearms examiner.  Professional experience in an accredited laboratory strongly preferred.  Significant experience in new examiner training, supervision, expert witness testimony and evaluation of the work of subordinates is required.

It is strongly preferred that applicants have:

- knowledge of general forensic testing, techniques and methods

- knowledge of the practices, techniques, standard test procedures and safety principles followed and involved in a laboratory

- ability to understand, apply and explain the provisions of the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities

- ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner

- ability to write general, statistical and technical reports

- ability to maintain records

Pay Type: Annual
Salary Minimum: $84,726
Salary Maximum: $110,836
