The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is accepting applications to fill a Forensic Scientist position in the Firearm and Toolmark Section. This position will be filled based on the successful candidate’s level of experience in one of the following:
Forensic Scientist I: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: training in the area of firearm and toolmark identification by means of an intensive two-year training program for the evaluation, classification and identification of firearm and toolmark related evidence using chemical and instrumental methods.
Hourly Compensation Rate: $20.13
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree relevant to the field of work. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science. Participation in an internship or as a technician within a firearm and toolmark section of a forensic science laboratory. Prior experience in the safe handling of firearms.
Forensic Scientist II: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: performing microscopic comparisons of fired bullets and cartridge cases to suspect firearms, toolmarks on a wide variety of evidence, chemical analysis of evidence items for distance determination, serial number restoration and crime scene processing for bullet trajectory analysis. Testifies in court as an expert witness.
Hourly Compensation Rate: $24.48
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree relevant to the field of work and six (6) months relevant work experience. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science. One (1) year of experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in Firearm and Toolmark cases. Prior experience in the safe handling of firearms. Membership in the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiner (AFTE).
Forensic Scientist III: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: performing microscopic comparisons of fired bullets and cartridge cases to suspect firearms, toolmarks on a wide variety of evidence, chemical analysis of evidence items for distance determination, serial number restoration and crime scene processing for bullet trajectory analysis. Reviews technical procedures and provides assistance with audits. Testifies in court as an expert witness.
Hourly Compensation Rate: $25.68
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree relevant to the field of work and three years relevant work experience. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Requirements: Master’s degree (MS) in Forensic Science. Three (3) years of experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in Firearm and Toolmark cases. Experience in testifying in a court of law as a Firearm and Toolmark Examiner. Prior experience in the safe handling of firearms. Membership in the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiner (AFTE).
