Brief Description of Duties:
The incumbent serves as a Firearms Identification Specialist with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Firearms and Fingerprint Examination Division. The incumbent serves as a fully qualified Firearms Identification Specialist in the Firearms Identification Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department. Independently conducts all examinations in the area of firearms, toolmarks, and fracture identification. These examinations involve using the most advanced techniques and expertise necessary to obtain forensic laboratory results, which includes innovative macroscopic and microscopic examination techniques to include bunter marks, ejection patterns, ballistic trajectory and barrel casting. Handles the most complex forensic firearms cases received by the laboratory in the specialty area. Conducts chemical examinations without guide from forensic Chemist to perform serial number restoration procedures, by chemical, electrolytic etch or magnetic processes and for the determination of muzzle-to-garment distances by wet chemical tests. Interprets and evaluates the results of examinations and prepare laboratory reports. Possess a high degree of mechanical aptitude, reads and interprets schematic and line drawings and analyzes mechanisms of firearms for the purpose of assessing the possibility of accidental discharges and diagnosis of reasons for which malfunctions. Retains a detailed understanding and high competence in photographic techniques applicable to firearms, toolmarks and fracture identifications for the purpose of producing a clear and accurate photographic record of the condition of the evidence both prior to and following laboratory analysis. Serves as a recognized expert witness in the Superior court of the District of Columbia and the United States District Court on matters relating to firearms identification and related evidence in all major crimes where expert witness testimonies are a major component of the evidentiary chain. Advises the prosecutor on the proper approach to use in presenting forensic testimony and assist in the preparation of questions to ask defense firearms experts hired to refuse Government expert testimony. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Candidates must have one (1) year of specialized experience. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
