The West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory anticipates an upcoming job posting seeking an individual for long-term commitment to the Forensic Sciences within the field of Firearm and Toolmark Identification and its various sub-disciplines. This individual will work alongside of two trained examiners and one other trainee within the Firearm/Toolmark Section. Current disciplines within the Firearm/Toolmark Section include:

a. Examination and comparison of firearms and firearm-related evidence
b. Serial number restorations
c. Distance determinations
d. Examination and comparison of tools and toolmark evidence
e. Physical/fracture match comparisons
f. Shooting scene reconstruction / Trajectories
g. Footwear and tire track examinations and comparisons

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in firearms to be accepted as an Examiner Trainee, though trained examiners are encouraged to apply. Trainee applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in a natural or physical science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, etc.). Transcripts are required and can be mailed along with a Civilian Employee Application to:

Forensic Laboratory Director
West Virginia State Police
725 Jefferson Road
South Charleston, WV 25309

Civilian Employee Applications are available at:  http://www.statepolice.wv.gov/employment/Documents/civilianapp.pdf

Applications are now being accepted. However, this is an anticipated position that may not be funded until July 1st, so no offical posting has been made at this time. I will update this topic as additional information becomes available.

Please email me with any questions.
