I am asking for assistance in identifying the model number for a Taurus revolver with the following description: caliber .357 Magnum, six-chamber cylinder, stainless steel, 3 inch barrel, fixed front/adjustable rear sights, no lock, serial number J... stamped on the right side of the frame, MG85 stamped on the cylinder face, G85 stamped on the extractor and 152 stamped on the yoke.  It looks like a model 669 but I can't find anything about it being made with a 3 inch barrel.  Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Is this close?  Images from an old RCMP-GRC file.

We have some manuals on file and I found one for Taurus revolvers in general. The only models that fit (according to the chart) are the model 66 and model 669. It does say that both of those models can have the 3in barrel with the rear adjustable sights and a 6 chamber cylinder which is chambered for .357 Magnum.

Also, you can try putting the serial number in the following link, which is a model look-up direct from Taurus:

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the information.  I tried using the Taurus serial number search but I didn't get any result.  The revolver does not appear to be registered.

I guess you could always try to contact Taurus directly and see if they can help you. Good luck!
