On February 12, 2013 the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences announced its support for the forthcoming transfer of the Harris County Sheriff's Office's Regional Firearms Identification Laboratory to the Institute. The move comes as a result of Harris County's effort to integrate all forensic science disciplines into one, science-based organization. This transfer from the Sheriff's Office to the Institute includes the hiring of additional staff.
