 DEPARTMENT:            Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences                                     
HOURS:                       40-Housrs per Week / As Assigned

                                    Based on 26 Pay Periods
 
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from a four year accredited institution with a major in the natural, physical, or forensic sciences. (Preference will be given to a candidate that has completed a documented training program in Firearms Identification.) Candidate must have at least one (1) year experience in a firearms laboratory. (A minimum of one (1) year experience as a firearms examiner and prior experience testifying in court related to firearms identification is highly preferred).
 
JOB DESCRIPTION: Conducts Laboratory Examinations: 1. Evaluates and test fires various types of firearms. 2. Examines and evaluates fired evidence exhibits and test fired specimens. 3. Restores serial numbers (firearms).  Issues reports which accurately reflect the results of examinations; provides expert testimony in the discipline of Firearms Examination; participates in the Firearms Examiner Call Out rotation; conducts reviews of other examiners’ cases (administrative and technical); enters specimens into the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS), reviews correlation results, and verifies possible hits; participates in the training of new examiners; provides technical assistance to police officers, the District Attorney’s Office and other law enforcement personnel. When needed, leads and monitors technical and support personnel, work assignments and job performances. Stands, walks, runs, talks, and hears. Safely test fires all types of firearms on a routine basis; works for extended periods of time while seated at a comparison microscope and personal computer and works for extended periods of time at any hour during Firearm Examiner Call Out.   Lifts items up to 50-lbs.
