     This employee performs forensic analysis activities, primarily in the area of firearms/ballistics. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, examining, testing, and analyzing evidence; confirming ballistics evidence matches; test firing firearms and examining fired ammunition recovered from crime scenes, preparing reports or presentations of findings, testifying in court as an expert witness; and  supervision and training of Crime Lab personnel.

 Supervision Received General supervision. Receives assignments and determines method and procedure.       
  • Examples of Essential Duties
  • Examines, identifies and evaluates suspected ballistic evidence, Prepares technical written reports in order to document scientific analyses and results.   
  • Attends pre-trial conferences, prepares exhibits for courtroom use, and provides expert testimony in courts throughout the state.   
  • Discusses test results and evidence collection with officers and attorneys.   
  • Remains current on scientific advancements in the ballistics field through technical publication presentations and training in order to apply appropriate methodologies. 
 
Decision Making Uses independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations. May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions.
 Leadership Provided Has managerial authority over Crime Lab personnel.         
  • Typical Qualifications
  • Previous supervisory or management experience, court testimony experience and laboratory experience all required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, physics, forensic science or related field is required. 
  • AFTE Certification is required
  • 1-3 years' of experience in firearms identification required, and 3-5 years experience preferred.
  • Prior knowledge and experience using JusticeTrax Software is preferred.
   SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Skill in operating laboratory instruments, equipment and computer systems related to areas of responsibility.
